Nairobi, Kenya, 2022
Kenyans went to the polls in Aug. 2022 in an unusual presidential election pitting longtime opposition leader Raila Odinga, who was backed by outgoing president Uhuru Kenyatta, against the deputy president William Ruto who styled himself as the outsider. Ruto won the election with 50.5% of the vote, shaking up the East African nation’s politics by appealing to struggling Kenyans’ economic concerns rather than ethnic allegiances.
